The accident happened on a self-acting chain jig dipping from 1 in 10 to 1 in 3. An empty tub, which had left the rails, was replaced, and the jig restarted. After running 20 yards the chain broke, and both the full tub and the empty one ran back. The latter left the rails and stopped in the jig, but the load ran to the bottom and there struck the deceased in the chest, killing him instantly. The broken link was not found. The chain was said to have been in good condition before the accident, hut the link in it which broke was probably strained at the time the tub left the metals in the first instance.
