- Died October 10. While deceased was altering the timber in order to lay rails in a lift in the broken workings of the Top seam, some stone and shaley coal fell from the roof upon and bruised his shoulder and hip. He was off work a day or two and worked for a month always complaining of pain. On April 25 the doctor ordered him to bed and 5 weeks he was taken to Newcastle infirmary where he remained 5 weeks but not operated on. He was brought home and was confined to bed until his death. An inquest was held and medical evidence given that deceased died of exhaustion due to the growth of a malignant disease of the pelvis caused by the injury in the pit and so the Jury found.
