- 22 June 1933: Newbattle Pit Fatality - A pit brusher named John Thomson (36), while engaged in cleaning operations underground in Lingerwood Pit, Newbattle, received serious internal injuries, on his right hip from a stone which fell from the side of the road working. He died in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary a few hours after the occurrence. Thomson resided at Ash Cottage, Gorebridge. [Scotsman 24 June 1933]
