Masons had been repairing part of the pit walling a little above the archway into the headings. The debris they had taken down accumulated in a heap on the sump planks. The hitcher signalled to be raised to the surface, the cage being much tilted on the debris. When the cage reached meetings it collided with the down coming one and the hitcher was thrown out and killed.
