- Details of Event
- This accident occurred in a stall which had just passed through a rise fault and was being opened out again on the top of this fault. Deceased was working at the coal by the side of the fault preparing the longwall face when a large piece of sandstone rock, triangular in section, fell without warning from the roof between the fault and the roof fracture. It fractured his spine, and he died as the result of his injuries on September 2nd. He had knocked on this roof only a few minutes before the accident but owing to the size of the stone it sounded quite hard. The place was timbered in accordance with the rules but it is probable that a prop or two set along the edge of the fault on the rise side would have prevented the accident.
