He fell from a water lodge in No.2 Shaft, 122 yards to the bottom. He had removed the fence apparently to communicate with the shaft examiners who were about to descend, and must have overbalanced. The fence was 3 feet from the shaft side and there was no evidence to show why he should slip or stumble.
