Deceased was drawing a prop which stood in the way of a pack which he was building at a gateway end. He had partially loosened the head of the prop, and appeared then to have struck it with a hammer, when a large stone, one side of which was formed by a slip rind the other by a longwall break, broke off close to the prop, and fell upon him, fracturing his spine and two ribs. A ringer and chain were found close beside him, but did not appear to have been used. He died on 4th August from pneumonia and heart failure, secondary to the spinal fracture.
