- Details of Event
- An endless rope road extends from the surface into the hill side, and sets of 20 tubs are run at a speed of about 5 miles per hour, with clutch bogies at either end attached to the rope which runs underneath the tubs. The road is at many points too narrow to allow a person to stand clear when the sets are passing each other but refuge holes are provided and the sets are attached to the rope at regular intervals so that they pass each other at three definite points on the road, and these points, as well as the refuge holes, are white washed. No run rider rides with the sets, but workmen ordinarily ride in the empty sets Deceased, who was not an active man and who had had his leg broken some years ago and walked with a stick, was employed on the plane, and was last seen at 5.45pm. by a shifter who was riding in-bye. He was then in a refuge at a passing place and had his lighted lamp with him. His body was found by two deputies at 7.55pm., lying on the empty road and much mangled, and 75 yards out-bye from a refuge hole at a crossing place, in which, or near which his lamp, hammer, and cap were found. The tubs of a loaded set had apparently caught him while he was attempting to reach a refuge hole, and his body had been dragged out-bye and then caught by an incoming empty set. The tubs of the loaded set had been derailed, but had regained the rails at some points placed for the purpose. The tubs of the empty set were also derailed.
