Deceased was hewing alone in a seam 11 feet thick, and was taking off a lift leaving a rate of coal 4 feet wide next the goaf. The putter left him apparently quite safe, but on returning in five minutes found the whole place had closed, burying deceased. It was evident that he had warning, as he had collected all his gear. Had he not spent time in doing so he would probably have got clear.
