While engaged below a locomotive engine removing the crank pin a splinter of iron flew and destroyed one of his eyes. He was at once attended by a doctor who removed the splinter from the eye. The same night he was put under chloroform by two doctors and the eye removed. The operation was nearly over when he collapsed and died.
