- Deceased, who was working by himself at the time of the alleged accident, stated that when lifting the end of a loaded tub which had been derailed, he slipped his foot and wrenched himself. Three days afterwards he was seen by a doctor, who attended him until his death took place on 21st October. The medical evidence at the inquest, based upon the history of the case and a post-mortem examination, was that "he died from collapse and exhaustion due to loss of blood from stomach, and that showed might have existed before the wrench, and that the lifting of the tub produced so much strain upon the parts affected, which, in my opinion, was the cause of the', haemorrhage. There were some adhesions not likely to have been caused without a wrench." The jury found that "deceased died from collapse arising from the accident, namely, a wrench, on 12th September, 1912, received whilst engaged in lifting a truck on to the rails. The occurrence was not reported to the owners or their officials at the time. They did not admit that any accident had taken place, and did not communicate with me on the matter until after the inquest.
