- Details of Event
- When pulling a piece of coal off the face with a crowbar a piece about 14lbs. in weight caught and grazed his shoulder. He completed his shift, and worked a shift following day. On the 12th October he was sent to the Royal Infirmary at Doncaster, and was operated on for strangulation and gangrene of the bowel. The operation was successful, but the deceased never recovered, and died on the 12th October. At the inquest the jury returned a verdict that he died from the result of an accident in the pit, although the doctor who made the operation stated in his evidence that the blow on the shoulder had nothing whatever to do with the cause of death.
