- Details of Event
- Died July 18. Deceased was hewing during the fore shift in a place which had just crossed a downthrow hitch of 21 feet; the tub stood on the higher level and the casting of the coals was rather awkward. When loosed by his son he complained of a pain in his side and said he had wrenched himself while using the shovel. He became very ill and never worked again. He was taken to the Ingham Infirmary, South Shields, where he was operated on, under chloroform, for strangulated hernia. The Operation was successful but he died an hour afterwards without regaining consciousness. An inquest was held after a post-mortem examination when medical evidence showed that the recent attack was a recurrence of a similar trouble for which he had been previously operated on. The majority of the medical evidence was against any accident having any connection with the death.
