Details of Event
Explosion of firedamp and coal dust. Probably caused by defective safety lamp. 155 killed. Was recovered in August and identified by his Boys Brigade belt with the motto ‘Press Forward’. He was the grandson of Elija Holand the fireman who lost four sons in the explosion. At this date there were still ninety three bodies in the mine.
