- He was examining the connections between shotfiring cables and the detonator leads before firing a shot, when 3 tons of coal fell away from the face and killed him. The sprags had been taken out 3 hours before, but no attempt was made to get the coal down, and it did not fall, the sprags were replaced. A careful examination might to have shown that blasting was not necessary.
