- Details of Event
- They were engaged putting in a balk of timber just below the 352 fathom level in order to carry the road over an old gunniss 11 feet wide. Deceased men were on a stage hung by chains at three corners, the fourth resting on a hitch in the foot wall 3 or 4 feet deep. The balk when swung in on the blocks knocked the bearer of the scaffold from the hitch, resulting in its tipping up and the men falling away to the 375 fathom level. The failure to suspend the fourth corner in the same way as the other three was reprehensible and due either to want of thought or laziness in fetching a chain from some other place. An unsatisfactory point however was that the underground agent expressed himself at the inquest as satisfied with the stage. 2 killed.
