- Details of Event
- Deceased with others was ripping the clod on a length of jig 10 yards long between two landings, the seam having a dip of 20 degrees. A shot was fired about halfway up and deceased went up to examine. He called to his mates to get out of the way and began pulling loose clod. When so doing he heard the clod weighting and started to go towards the landing. He was buried beneath a heavy fall extending from the top lauding to where the shot had been fired. The clod came from two slips curving over to form an arch and making what is locally termed a ‘pig-back’. Deceased was evidently deceived as to what part was working and sought refuge in the wrong direction. The roof of the jig was not timbered as the clod, when once settled on the packs, will usually stand for some years. These ‘pig-backs’ however have in the past been a fruitful source of accident in working the Red Shagg seam.
