While walking on the side of a new tram line which was being made between the clay pits and the loading station he stumbled over a sleeper, and his leg getting across the rail was run over and badly crushed by a full waggon and a locomotive. He was at once taken to the hospital and his leg amputated, but blood-poisoning set in and he died on the 14th.
