- Details of Event
- Explosion of gas. 3 killed 1 injured. Four men were engaged in dismantling an old fan in the Hartley Section of the Pit when the explosion occurred. Samson, Quinn and Forbes received the full force of the explosion, but Stewart was protected to some extent by a hutch. The hutch broke the force of the explosion for him and probably saved his life. At first it was feared that the disaster might be even more serious than it was, as it was not definitely known at the time how many men were at work in the dook.
