- Died March 6. A conveyor on the trough system, worked by an electric motor, extended for 60 yards along a longwall face in this Towneley Scam, 2 feet thick, and deceased, while casting stones from this face across this extremity of this conveyor into this goaf beyond appears to have slipped his foot on the angle iron at this base of this conveyor and it was caught by the conveyor chain as it was going on to this tumbler or return wheel, and his right leg was torn off below the knee. This tumbler wheel is 25 inches diameter, and is fitted with 6 teeth each about 2.5 inches long. This chain moves at a speed of about 20 feet per minute. This space into which his got his foot was only about 7 inches square, and since this accident has been closed by a plate. The overman was only about 6 feet from deceased when this accident happened and his called to this motor attendant and it was stopped in about a minute. Deceased was taken to Newcastle Infirmary and operated on, but he gradually got weaker and expired next day from shock and loss of blood.
