28 February 1918: James Stein, a young married miner, who resided at Bridgend, Linlithgow, was fatally injured by a fall from the roof in one of the mines of James Ross & Co., Philpstoun Oilworks. A younger brother, John Stein, was severely injured by the same fall. [Scotsman 2 March 1918] John Stein, the young Philpstoun miner who on Thursday was injured in a mine by a fall of stone from the roof, died on Friday night. An elder brother, James Paris Stein, was killed by the same fall. [Scotsman 4 March 1918] FAI record – James Paris Stein, miner's drawer, 5 Bridgend Rows, Linlithgow, died on 28 February 1918 in No.1 Shale Mine, Philpstoun, Parish of Abercorn, Linlithgowshire, when a large piece of shale fell upon him and John Stein, miner's drawer, Kinnaird Terrace, Philpstoun, died on 2 March 1918 at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, from injuries sustained on 28 February 1918 in No.1 Shale Mine when a large piece of shale also fell upon him.
