- Details of Event
- His work was at a coal washer, but he was run over by one of a set of 13 loaded wagons a considerable distance from it, near the saw mill at the back of the shops close to a heap of scrap iron A locomotive was taking the wagons up a gradient of 1 in 95 at a very slow speed, not more than three miles an hour, and the whistle was being sounded all the time when the driver and shunter heard a shout and the locomotive was topped at once and deceased was found under the first wheel of the second wagon with a drinking can lying on the rail close by him smashed. he said when he got out that he was going to get two pieces of iron from the scrap heap but when he left the washer he told a man who was working with him that he was going to fill the drinking can at a spring not far from where he was caught and it seems probable that he had been passing under the wagon when it was in motion and slipped. Died the following day.
