- Details of Event
- Deceased was taking a journey of four laden trams up a gradient of 12 inches per yard, and was riding on the chain, when he was seen by Wm. Hopkins, overman, to fall off. Hopkins immediately sprang to the wires and knocked ‘Stop.’ The journey stopped in a few yards, and deceased was found under the first tram the front wheels of which hail gone over him. He had been dragged along for about 14 or 17 yards. Hopkins when he saw the light falling, heard the trams bump, but nothing has been observed to account for such bumping at that spot. The road was well laid, and was said to have been free from lumps of coal or rubbish at the time of the accident.
