- An outbreak of glanders occurred and it was his duty to destroy the affected ponies. Whilst opening one of them for the veterinary surgeon to examine he pricked his finger. He suffered severe pain in the arm the same night and rapidly developed the symptoms of glanders, from which he died on 21st March, 1914. He had neglected to use rubber gloves.
