- Roof fall. The death of Robert Somerville (58) Miner's Brusher, 4 Woodside Crescent, Fallin, in No.3 Pit, Polmaise Colliery, about 12.00 midnight on Monday 3 December, was the Subject of the second Inquiry. It was stated by Alex Kerr (28), Miner's Brusher, 18 Fallin Rows, that the accident occurred in Section 20 of the Pit, No.2 Level and No Heading. Along with another man, Samuel Gilmour, he was driving No 6 heading ough to a level to make an air course. Sommerville was working along to an old split in the waste further in. Suddenly he heard a cry of "Oh!" and with Gilmour, said that Sommerville had been hit by a stone from the roof. Some time passed fore they could get the fall removed to release Sommerville, and it was then found the man was dead. The condition of the roof was good, and as he had heard erville chapping below the laigh roof, as Somerville usually did, he considered it too, was good. (Stirling Observer).
