- 24 January 1921: Explosion In A Shale Mine Near Kirkliston - Five Men Injured - An explosion of gas occurred on Monday night in Ingleston pit (No. 36), near Kirkliston, belonging to Scottish Oils (Ltd.), by which five men sustained serious injuries to the face and upper parts of the body. The names of the men are:- George Frame (30), married, Kirkliston; Patrick Conway (41), married, Kirkliston; David M'Pherson (23), single, Newbridge; James Greenan (35), married, Westerton; Robert Sneddon (28), single, Westerton. All the men were conveyed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Frame and Conway are the more serious cases, but it was learned yesterday that all were as well as could be expected. The men were employed in the safety lamp section of the pit, and at the time of the explosion were all wearing safety lamps. No definite information has been obtained as to the cause of the explosion. [Scotsman 26 January 1921]
