- Details of Event
- Repairs were being made at the bottom of a working shaft, and it was necessary to partly uncover the sump for that purpose. The deceased, who was a skilled and careful workman, stepped across a hole 3ft. 3in. long and 1ft. 7in. wide to get a hammer and chisel. He was coming back when he was seen to disappear down the hole. He fell a distance of 47 feet and was drowned in the water at the bottom of the sump. The place was well lighted with electric light, and it is extraordinary that the deceased should have fallen through so small a hole.
