- Details of Event
- A lift had advanced a few feet in the extraction of a pillar in the second or broken working of the High Main seam which here is made up of top coal, 3 inches; sagre band, 10 inches; and bottom coal, 4 feet 4 inches. It is usual to work under the band, but in this place a quantity of it had fallen and the place stood for a day or two owing to a dispute as to whether the hewers or shifters should put it in order. Eventually deceased started to put the place right after it had been examined by the deputy, and had worked four hours when a mass of the band relieved by slippery faces fell on him from the face and near the loose end and directly over where a shot had been fired in the bottom coal a few days previously. The deputy was near the place when the accident happened and relieved him at once. Suitable timber ready for use was close at hand. The Local Inspectors reported ‘we are of opinion that the accident is purely accidental.'
