He was packing up the rails about 3 yards in front of the machine, when a large slab of coal rolled off the face and killed him instantly. The machine was not running at the time. The fall of coal disclosed a slip at one end of it and a weight break behind. The men had previously sounded the coal face and were satisfied with its soundness.
