While the pit was off work Smith and Wright were engaged doing repairs in a gateroad and Wilkinson was attending to an electrically driven pump. The district had not been inspected for at least 3 days, and as the ventilating and had been standing for 12 hours during this period, a large accumulation of firedamp occurred. By some means the gas became ignited and there was a severe explosion, which killed the three men and severely injured a fourth man who was temporarily assisting Wilkinson. 3 killed.
