- Details of Event
- Deceased was holding a light while his mate was barring down some stone at the face of a heading, when a fall of sulphur and roof stone 3 feet thick came away from two backs and a slip over an area of 15 feet by 11 feet. There was a balk set at the outbye end of the fall 10 feet from the face, but the action of barring down the stone removed the support at the face, and the roof having three loose sides fell as stated, killing deceased instantly. A careful examination of the roof stone had been made, and it was considered safe, but there is no doubt that in view of the fact that the backs and slip were visible, it would have been better to set another balk nearer the face before removing the stone, which was all the support remaining at that point.
