He was walking round a large mass of material to ascertain the condition of the face where nothing had been touched for some time and was turning round when bucketful of shale fell from the face some 40ft up and caught him on the head, injuring him so severely that he died the same day. The fall was a very small one, was due to the sun on the face after a frost.
