Details of Event
Died 19th September. He had lifted a stone with the crane and the machinery out of gear before he got the jib round. He probably did not put on the break for four driving gears were whirled round so rapidly that they burst and Smales was fatally injured. Pieces of the wheel were hurled 100 yards.
