- They were machine drilling a horizontal hole in the foot of the quarry face when a stone weighing some 1 to 12 tons broke off at a vertical joint or "queer" and fell from the face some 15 to 20 feet above them and killed them both. Four days prior to the accident there had been an attempt to move the stone by blasting, but without the desired result on each of these days the stone had been specially examined and it was considered to be safe. 2 killed.
