- Details of Event
- This accident occurred on a ‘chain-bank’ where the inclination varies from level to 1 in 15. Loads are taken down by horses, but at the top of the bank a long chain which passes round a post and extends down the full length of the bank is attached to the back end of a load and acts as a brake. A load going down the bank had stopped through the chain becoming entangled with the wheels. Deceased and two other men put the load right and it started away. The rattle of the chain round the post at the top startled a horse waiting there with a load to go down, and it set off down the bank at a good speed. The driver having failed in an attempt to check it shouted down to the men on the bank. Two of them and the driver of the first horse managed to take refuge in a manhole, but deceased was knocked down by the horse and crushed by the load against a prop at the lower corner of the manhole before he could get clear.
