The three men were ascending a sinking pit in a hoppit. The hoppit caught a pump staging 77 yards from the surface. Saunders and Orton were thrown out and fell to the bottom of the shaft a distance of 310 yards. Simons remained in the hoppit but was killed by the impact. 3 killed.
