- Details of Event
- It was the duty of this boy to guard a road over the quarry, and also to keep an account of the wagons filled close at hand. Deceased was seen at 4.10 p.m. on the railway in the quarry bottom. He was then near a disused staging by means of which stone had once been delivered, from a drift above, down a spout into wagons. The siding near the spout is still used; where a wagon had been left with the brake down. A quarryman heard cries for help, and on going to the place found deceased lying between the rails of the siding right under the gantry. It is supposed that he had got upon the wagon and released the brake, and whilst trying to get off the wagon he was crushed between it and a post, there being only a space of 5 inches between them. He died on 21st August.
