He was engaged in cutting into the coal face at the deep side of a breasting in the Holly Lane seam when a "goth" Occurred, causing a large lump of coal to part from a joint in the face. This lump fell over and crushed him so severely that he died on the same day from shock due to the injuries received. He had taken all proper precautions to protect himself, the place having been well timbered.
