Details of Event
Deceased attended to the land sale sidings situated in the colliery yard. He had assisted in loading a cart of coal from a wagon and when finished and handing the carter the usual ticket to deliver to the weigh clerk the carter observed blood on it and told the deceased it must have come from a small scratch on the inner side of the right wrist. The deceased did not mention having received the scratch when putting coal into the cart until the afternoon, when he showed the scratch to his daughter. Next day, the 22nd, he visited the doctor. Blood-poisoning quickly supervened, and he died on the 26th from septicaemia. There was no evidence adduced at the inquest as to how the scratch occurred. The Jury found that deceased died from blood-poisoning from a wound on the wrist caused whilst carrying out his duties in the colliery yard.
