- Details of Event
- Deceased who worked alone had fired two shots charged with compressed powder and lighted by means of cotton covered fuse. Another miner, who had gone into the face to shout ‘loose it’ found it in darkness, and on reaching the face found deceased lying unconscious at the side of the road his head being within a foot of the path of one of the shots. He never regained consciousness, and died on the following day. On testing the fuse it was found to burn at the rate of ft. in 30 seconds. The length usually used was stated to be about 3ft. Deceased had apparently delayed too long while lighting the second shot or had returned prematurely on a hanging shot.
