- Details of Event
- Braithwaite was standing about 6 feet above the quarry floor and was boring a pop-hole in a loose lump, which formed part of a heap of previously blasted limestone lying against the quarry face. He had only been boring a few minutes when some of the loose material under the lump gave way and the whole mass commenced to slide down. He tried to jump backwards out of the way but was unable to get clear, and the big lump (about two tons weight), in which he had been boring, rolled right on to him causing instantaneous death. The foreman had examined the heap during the morning and thought it was all right, and deceased’s mate said that they had tried, and failed, to bar down the lump before commencing to bore in it.
