He had been working at the pit bottom cleaning out the sump with both cages suspended in the shaft. He got a telephone message from the surface to send up the south cage for repairs; this was done and the proper signals given. He was found half an hour later dead underneath the cage which had been lowered to the pit bottom. Apparently he mistook the cage which was being lowered and went underneath the pit and was caught.
