Deceased was sawing a prop in the King Coal workings, when the saw slipped and cut his thumb. He worked on the two following days but complained of severe pains, and an abscess formed under his arm. Later he was removed to Billinge Hospital and afterwards to Whittingham Asylum, where he died on June 5th. The result of a post-mortem examination held revealed that death was due to confusional insanity, brought about by the accident.
