- Details of Event
- A hole 10 or 11 feet deep, charged with about 20 cartridges of gelignite, bad been blasted on the 21st December, and from the work which it did, the deceased man Allen formed the opinion that the whole of the gelignite had not gone off. He warned the foreman to that effect in case he should send anyone to work there, as he (Allen) was going away for Christmas. The foreman thought it best to let the place remain idle and did so until his return. Both men resumed work there on the 30th December and were getting off the ground which had been loosened they were expecting to find some of the explosive when a severe explosion occurred, killing both men instantly. Evidently one of them struck some of the gelignite with his pick or bar and caused the explosion. The men are said to have been experienced miners and had worked as quarrymen for the last four or five years. 2 killed.
