- Details of Event
- At the commencement of the shift it was his duty to oil a fan situated at the end of a cross-cut from Clarke's shaft, adit level. He had walked down the ladderway in Clarke's shaft to the adit level, and to get to the cross-cut he had to cross the shaft and pass through a cramped space opposite the winding compartment. On going to or returning from the fan, he somehow or other fell into the winding compartment, and was found at the 40 fathoms level. Apparently the shaft entrance was properly fenced, as the shaftman who passed here on the previous shift said he observed the fence and it was then in proper order. There was no evidence to show how the accident had happened. Sedgman could have travelled a much easier way along the adit level from another shaft, but the way he elected to travel was slightly shorter.
