The pit was standing for coal with the empty cage rung off when three full tubs came running in at greater speed than usual. Two lockers should have been put in but one was missed. The tubs broke the stop block a yard from the cage and ran against the cage, which was one foot above the landing, owing to the spring of the rope. Deceased endeavoured to stop them by hanging on to the side of the front tub, and his skull was crushed between the side of the tun and the arching by the cage ascending and knocking the first tub up and off the road.
