- Details of Event
- Deceased and another hewer had almost completed their shift in a lift in broken workings in the Busty seam when a stone 6 feet by 4 feet and 1 foot 2 in thick fell from the roof upon him as he was standing in the fast nook of the place. The stone was a cauldron bottom and had glassy slips on three sides and broke off next the face. The slips could not be detected before it fell. No timber, of which there was ample supply was set under the stone but a prop and plank was set immediately next to it. The deputy had been in the place during the shift but the coal had not been taken below the stone. The Local Inspector reported 'there was plenty of timber and in our opinion it was an accident'.
