- This accident occurred in a district of pillars in the Low Main seam which had been lost by creep and was won out again from a different direction and the taking out of the pillars recommenced Deceased's lift had holed into an old jenkin and while he was pulling some coal off the face a large fall of blue metal stone, 19 feet long by 5 feet wide aid 3 feet thick triangular in section took place from the roof and fell upon him another hewer in the place escaping unhurt. The stone fell about half in the lift and half in the old jenkin. Four pair of gears were set under it in the lift the planks of which were broken and the outbye end of the stone rested on a tub in the place. The fall came away at a jack and a slip both of which were visible before the fall took place the slip running through the seam as well as extending into the roof. The deputy had visited the place during the shift and there was loose timber at hand. The Local Inspectors reported ‘in our opinion it was a pure accident no one being in any way to blame.
