- Deceased, who was contractor for the section, and reputed to he an exceptionally careful and skilful miner was cleaning up some soft dirt in front of an unholed longwall face in a seam about 4ft. in thickness, when a rate or slab of coal 6 feet long 2ft thick at top, diminishing to a few inches at bottom, came away from a slip joint in the coal sat down, and toppled over against crushing his head against a prop. The place was in faulty ground but the slip had not been detected previously.
