He was killed at the face of a gateway immediately on returning to the place after firing a shot. The shot they had fired had been, contrary to the regulations, drilled in the solid and was a flanking hole; it had been heavily charged and when fired had knocked out several of the props and so caused the roof to fall and kill him.
